Garage Conversion,
New Orleans
A former 1600 sq. ft. detached garage, built in the early 1970s and hosting a series of business from construction companies to used car sales, was converted to a small one-bedroom residential unit, an art studio, and private garage. The apartment features warm bamboo flooring and custom wood lath walls. Lath is the substrate used when plaster walls or ceilings are created and originally made of wood has been replaced with metal lath or more commonly gypsum wall board. Wink Architecture has always been fascinated with this material with its enduring aesthetic, its varied patterns, and the history each piece tells. Wink has created railings, countertops, and lamps with salvaged wood lath and here promotes it to a prominent role in this small renovation.
