Uptown Rehab and Addition 2
New Orleans
Among many common renovations in New Orleans is the addition of a “camelback” or two-story addition in the rear of a one-story single “shotgun” style home. While often this results in adding a second floor on top of existing construction, this house utilized existing space in the rear yard to construct two new stories from the ground up.
This house, along with “Uptown Rehab and Addition 1” creates a primary entrance on the side, away from the street, and at the end of valuable off-street parking. This is useful for New Orleans’ narrow lots by inviting the user more to the center of the house. The main living area in the rear, comprised of kitchen, living, and dining rooms opens up a private rear porch and yard. New bedrooms on the second floor create a comfortable and functional arrangement for contemporary living. The existing one-story house remains intact yet updated to retain its historic street frontage. A long side porch adds a continual indoor-outdoor connection.
