Rouses Market, 701 Baronne, New Orleans
Rouses Market chose to insert their brand into the Central Business District, making them the first full-service grocery store in generations to operate downtown, and helping to usher in a new era of downtown living. As Project Architect, Wink (in his role at Williams Architects) managed the renovation of the former 1954 Pontchartrain motors (later Sewel Cadillac) dealership and two adjacent buildings. The project received State and Federal Historic Tax Credits, an award from the Downtown Development District, and still serves as a lifeblood of the neighborhood. The ground floor sales area retains defining elements of the former auto dealership, while the upper floors serve as a parking garage in this adaptive reuse of an International Style building.
